Instant Oats Dosa- Recipe for a scanty- fridge day

Don’t have spare time to cook an elaborate meal? Or got hungry before you could decide what to order? Here’s a quick and healthy oats dosa recipe I came across when I couldn’t bother waiting for food delivery.

A quick scan through the fridge told me I had no veggies and no curd. Just some almost wilted coriander looking to be salvaged. So I’ll share here first the no-curd recipe I found at that point at antoskitchen.com :

For 4 servings:

  • 1 cup oats
  • 1/2 cup wheat flour
  • 1/2 cup rice flour
  • Salt to taste

Soak the oats for five minutes. Blend in a mixer. Add the other ingredients to the puree, add water and your batter is ready! Yup, as simple as that! Now come the fun additions. I had some leftover ‘poduthool/podithooval’ powder from the previous day. Translated to common speak, that’s a  dry roasted and powdered mix of rice, urad dal, peppercorns and curry leaves. And it just made so much sense to add this to the batter!  

Since I was going out-of-the-recipe anyway, I threw in a spoonful of flaxseeds as well. Win some extra points for the health quotient, shall we? 😉   Chopped up an onion and the poor coriander looking to be saved and added both to the batter as well. Finally, my batter was ready!

The result? Of course the dosas were so delicious, I abandoned my plans to grind chutney and wolfed them down with no sides!

Quick tips:

1. Add more rice flour to get crispier dosais.

2. Batter consistency: Free-flowing. Thinner than regular dosa batter. Only then do they get all beautifully ‘hole’y like rava dosai. So, add more water if necessary until you get a flowing consistency.

Instant Oats Dosa- Recipe at a glance

Serves: 1 very hungry person (That’s 5 dosas!)

Ingredients:

Oats, rice flour, wheat flour, peppercorns
Flaxseeds, onion, coriander leaves, salt

Method

  1. Soak 1/2 a cup of oats for 5 minutes.
  2. In the meanwhile, finely chop 1 small onion and about 10 sprigs or 1/4 cup of coriander leaves.
  3. Blend the soaked oats in a mixer with 1/4 cup wheat flour, 1/4 cup rice flour, 1 tsp of peppercorns and 1/4 cup of water.
  4. To the blended mixture, add the chopped onions and coriander, 1 tsp flaxseeds and 1/2 a tablespoon of salt.
  5. Add 1/2 a cup of water.

The batter is ready! Go ahead and serve your hungry tummy those holey dosas!
